MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING
Group Training & Individual MI Consultation
WHAT IS MI?
Motivational interviewing (MI) is a client-centered, goal-oriented communication style that aims to enhance an individual’s motivation to change behaviors by exploring and resolving ambivalence. Developed by psychologists William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick, MI was first used in alcohol treatment. MI is now used across a variety of problem areas, including illness management, weight management, and life adjustment. MI is also useful in helping others to change a feeling, such as managing grief and loss. MI has been studied in over 2,000 randomized clinical trials.
Dr. Bethea-Walsh is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), an international organization of trainers in Motivational Interviewing (MI) started in 1997 by a small group of trainers trained by William R. Miller, Ph.D., and Stephen Rollnick, Ph.D.
