Modeling Self-Love and Self-Compassion

“Motivational Interviewing is about inspiring people to change…respecting them and looking up to them in such a way that they remember to look up to themselves…”

~Chris Wagner, Ph.D., Virginia Commonwealth University, USA, MINT member

Compassion is a key component of the MI “Spirit”. Our warm and empathic way of being with ambivalent individuals teaches them self-love and self-compassion.

We model this way of being for the individuals we serve. We normalize ambivalence while quelling the inner critic and instilling hope for change. When we affirm the individuals we serve with observations of their strengths and resources, we open them up to making the choices that bring them closer to who they really want to be in the world.

This gift is worth its weight in gold.
